2nd GWSP Asia Network Workshop
“Global water system hotspots in Asia region: mega cities and dams"
On June 8-11 2006 the second meeting of the GWSP Asia Network
took place in Guangzhou, China. The main goals of the workshop
were to summarize the existing state of knowledge on current cumulative
impacts of mega cities and that of dams in Asia and to set and
launch a research agenda for mega cities and dams in Asia in the
context of the global water system.
The programme and presentations are available here.

Background of the GWSP Asia Network
The Research Institute on Humanity and Nature
(RIHN, Kyoto) hosted the first meeting of the GWSP Asia network
in Kyoto on 29-31 August 2005. The meeting was designed to develop
a network of water related studies and institutes in Asian countries,
linked to the GWSP in order to develop understanding and knowledge
of potential human impacts and climate change effects on water
issues in Asia. A total of 44 participants attended from Japan,
from seven other Asian countries, and from the GWSP Scientific
Steering Committee (SSC) and GWSP International Project Office
(IPO). On the first day more than 20 presentations were made to
provide background information on the plans for the meeting and
on current global change research on water in the region. Working
groups met on the second day to discuss three different topics
drawn from the GWSP science framework. After plenary discussion
of the working group reports the groups were re-focussed and on
the third day more detailed plans were discussed on three ‘hotspot’ areas:
dams; megacities in coastal zones; and land use change.
The conclusions of the meeting were as follows:
-
The country representatives decided to create
an informal network called GWSP-Asia
-
GWSP-Asia home page set up by RIHN to provide
a platform for exchanging information and data
-
-
GWSP-Asia might organise a workshop on dams
in Asia, possibly in India in 2006
