Third GWSP Workshop on Global Dams
and Reservoirs
Durham, New Hampshire (USA)
The GWSP Workshop on Global Dams and Reservoirs
represents the third in a series, which has engaged an international
community of experts to produce a joint database of unprecedented
detail depicting the worldwide population of dams and reservoirs.
As the effort moves forward, we are seeking the advice of a broad
community of potential users, who can provide insight for improving
the content and value of this new information resource. The major
goals of the Third GWSP Dams and Reservoirs Workshop are to: 1)
debut a first version of a global, integrated geospatial database
depicting the worldwide population of dams and reservoirs, 2)
discuss the optimization of the database design so that it supports
uses as diverse as state-of-the-art Earth system studies, improved
environmental management, and the design of policy instruments
for sustainable development and conflict reduction, and 3) start
a dialogue between data providers and the application community.A
broad dialogue involving geophysical, biological, chemical, engineering,
and social science is anticipated and will be summarized in subsequent
strategic planning documents and announcements to the community
through peer reviewed literature. Information about the outcome
of the workshop will be made available through the GWSP website
as soon as possible.

in Bonn, Germany. The key objectives of the workshop were to identify
(a) institutions, actors and scales which are of key relevance
for enhancing adaptive capacity of governance regimes towards
global environmental change, and (b) how governance regimes can
be enabled to strengthen the adaptive capacity and resilience
of the global water system. The 38 participants of the international
workshop came from all over the world and from backgrounds such
as political science, international relations, geography, economics,
law and anthropology.

The main goals of the workshop were to summarize the existing
state of knowledge on current cumulative impacts of mega cities
and that of dams in Asia and to set and launch a research agenda
for mega cities and dams in Asia in the context of the global
water system.

International
Conference on Integrated Assessment of Water Resources and Global
Change: a North-South Analysis
Bonn (Germany)
The GWSP co-organized together with HELP and GLOWA the International
Conference on Integrated Assessment of Water Resources and Global
Change: a North-South Analysis.
The main objective of the conference was to analyze the challenges
that are encountered in the context of global change in the integrated
assessment and management of water resources in large river basins.
The conference seeked to bring together water scientists and managers
with complementary backgrounds to exchange views, ideas, and experiences.
Special emphasis was put on information flows between the developed
and developing world.
By bringing together scientists and managers from North and South,
it is expected that international research efforts concerning
water related issues will be translated into more practical methods
and coherent approaches.
