Capacity Building on Adaptive Water Management: Training of Trainers

IHDP announces two new training seminars on the following topics:
- From Research to Social Change: The Case of Ecosystem Services
- Capacity Development in Adaptive Water Management
Each seminar will be led by selected organizations. The two seminars will run in parallel and encompass a three and a half- day training on the topics listed above, which are related to the larger theme of the 7th IHDP Open Meeting “Social Challenges of Global Change.” The seminars, which will commence with a common plenary session convening all workshop participants, will introduce the workshop participants to a variety of global change related concepts and methodologies from a wide range of disciplines. To top it off, the seminars will end with another group plenary session focusing on science-policy interaction.

The Capacity Building on Adaptive Water Management Training of Trainers course is co-organised by the University of Osnabrück, Wageningen University and Research Centre, and GWSP. The course is co-convened by the NeWater project and the UN Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC)

Further information and application forms are available for download here.

GWSP Digital Water Atlas
Launched on 21 February 2008

The GWSP Digital Water Atlas was launched on 21 February 2008 and is now available at atlas.gwsp.org. The Atlas currently contains 50 global maps and datasets on water-related topics and more than 100 links to other data and information sources. Comments and contributions are highly welcomed through the Atlas webite.

GWSP launched three Global Initiatives

In order to involve the broader natural and social science community interested in global change issues, GWSP defined three Global Initiatives. The Initiatives are targeted towards the production of scientifically outstanding and highly policy-relevant results.

The three Global Initiatives are:
• Global Scale Initiative: Ranking of Changes to the Global Water System
• Global Catchment Initiative: Bringing the Global Perspective to River Basin Research and Management
• Global Water Needs Initiative: Balancing Human and Nature Water Requirements

For each Initiative a GWSP Expert Group will be established in order to guide the implementation of related activities and the achievement of the overall goals and objectives. Membership in GWSP Expert Groups will be open to the broader scientific community related to global water system research.

Please download a more detailed description of the Global Initiatives. For further information on the first Expert Group meeting of the Global Catchment Initiative see here.

Development Issue "Water for People"
Vol. 51.1 (March 2008) is out now.

Water for People is the first compelling issue of the 2008 volume of Development- a volume devoted entirely to the environment and development.
Many communities are taking up the responsibility of their own water management, practicing or revitalizing new modes of water governance and building alternative knowledge of water. Water for People rethinks water and water scarcity, illustrating alternative management methods. It hopes to enrich the growing field of water-people relationships by focusing on how communities balance their water needs in ways that take into consideration both the environment and the people.

Nobel Peace Prize for IPCC
GWSP researchers amongst the authors of the 4th Assessment Report

The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the IPCC (jointly with former US Vice-President Al Gore) for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change as the Nobel Committee points out.

GWSP congratulates IPCC for receiving this outstanding award and especially the researchers from the GWSP community who are actively involved in the IPCC Working Groups. The following members of the GWSP SSC are key authors of the 4th Assessment Report: Taikan Oki is contributing author of WG I report, chapter 3 Surface and Atmospheric Climate Change and lead author of WG II report, chapter 3 Freshwater resources and their management. José Marengo is lead author of WG I report, chapter 9 Uncertainty and attributing to climate change and contributing author of WG II report, regional chapter on Latin America. Joseph Alcamo is coordinating lead author of WG II report, regional chapter on Europe. At the same time Joseph Alcamo is involved in the Summary for Policymakers and in the Technical Summary of the WG II report as drafting and lead author respectively. Joyeeta Gupta is lead author of the WG III report, chapter 13 Policies, instruments and co-operative arrangements.
